Religion and Science, The Forced Mix
Written by Said Samir
Monday, 22 August 2005
The habit of mixing religion with science is as ancient as witchcrafts in the early human history.  Some even claim that religion was introduced by the lack of science at the beginning of human history and till now. During the last few decades, that ancient forced-mix popped up again, and instead of using science to study and better understand the development of religion, many islamist scholars are redefining religious literature to explain and justify scientific facts.

Terrorism or Freedom-Fighting
Written by Said Samir
Sunday, 24 July 2005
A Freedom Fighter or a Terrorist?Weapons never killed ideas. Therefore, military action against international terrorism may not be a viable alternative. If the core motive for international terrorism is ideological and/or political then those who perpetrate terrorism are not just criminals, but they are also believers who consider what they are doing to be the right thing and worthy of dying for. Here lies the real danger. The whole world is responsible for letting such a belief grow and spread and accordingly responsible for correcting this fiction.

5. THE “SEARCH FOR SECURITY”: INFORMAL STREET FOOD VENDORS IN MATARIYA  - Cairo

Jörg Gertel and Said Samir

University of Freiburg, Germany, and Ain Schams University, Egypt

This paper tries to identify the role of informal street food vendors within the food system of Greater Cairo. Street food vendors offer processed food and drinks for immediate consumption in the streets; they provide inexpensive meals, snacks and beverages, which are quickly available at various hours of the day. But the government tends to perceive their role as problematic; vendors are accused of being potential public health hazards, and as they lack shops and licenses, they are exposed to continual harassment by the authorities. Little is known, however, about their importance within the food distribution system of Cairo, hence three crucial topics will be addressed in this paper:

The Metropolitan Food System Of Cairo Ed. by Jörg Gertel
Written by Said Samir
Sunday, 24 July 2005
Metropolitan areas are increasingly where the fundamental problems of our global society, such as poverty and hunger, are spatially concentrated. In urban areas socio-economic contradictions get mediated, often under violent conditions. Particulary urban food security - in the past often taken for granted - is, therefore, definitely a major future challenge. The present volume on Cairo attempts to shed light on social processes, which constitute an urban food system. While the papers presented here are both based on recent empirical research and written from different disciplinary perspectives, they contribute to a more comprehensive picture of this subject. Approaching an urban food system from a social perspective — as this collection attempts to demonstrate — offers detailed knowledge about the constituting structures of policies and economies, and in this respect it also provides important insights concerning the causal structure of urban hunger.

Arabs' Future
Written by Said Samir
Sunday, 22 May 2005
The Future
In spite of the poor record of Arab achievements in almost all fields, there is still ‘some’ hope for development that will only be realized in a timely fashion if Arabs stop dreaming and actually start working. Multi-dimensional development in the national and regional levels is a must to achieve the missing prosperity of the Arabs.  There are some opportunities and potential that can be capitalized on. There are also ‘some’ incentives that can encourage such a hope existing, and being realized, if the Arab’s political will goes beyond securing existing rulers and works towards developments that reach the roots of societies and empower all citizens. Because the human factor is the key tool and development is the key objective, an ideological and cultural development and reform is also a must in the course of advancing this region.

Website logs are a treasure of information you can gather from the visitors of your website. Unfortunately such valuable information is ignored by many webmasters either due to laziness or to ignorance! Successful websites are not just a strike of luck or a blain good idea. A good website is a site that caters for the needs of its visitors and also a good website is a site that attracts the kind of visitors it seeks.

Censoring Egypt - The Forbidden Rights
Written by Said Samir
Sunday, 12 June 2005
Freedom of expression in Egypt is a sensitive issue linked as it is to time-honored taboo subjects: sex, religion and politics. Suppression of freedom of expression by government authorities in Egypt covers literature and art. Most of the time it is unofficial, but whether expressed in writing or verbally, it is all-pervasive. From children’s songs as in the case of David and Goliath to serious writing as in the case of AUC professor Samia Mehrez's book For Bread Alone, censorship affects society as a whole.

Weak or Nobel - The Arab Regimes
Written by Said Samir
Sunday, 12 June 2005
Lately, it is has been hard to write about the peace process in the Middle East. Despite how keen one may be to identify a fair and equitable peace, it never gets accomplished. Simply what is going on in the region now makes one think more of war than peace. The whole region is fuming.

Written by Said Samir
Sunday, 22 May 2005
Political integration among Arab countries has for long time been a dear hope of nationalists,  nasserists and many Arabs. While the economic integration among Arab countries seems to be more realistic, but it is still challenged with the political paradox of power and cooperation. There are different views of economists, politicians, and businessmen, ranging between, pessimists, realists, and dreamers.

Amb. Edward Walker"Our country has been struggling with the definition of terrorism for long time and has not worked out a unified definition. But in general I can say that terrorism is the illegitimate act of killing innocent people for a political cause. If one goes to a restaurant and blows up a bunch of innocent women and children for any political cause, that is terrorism." Edward Walker

Democracy and the Muslim Countries
Written by Said Samir
Monday, 14 January 2002
The relation between the religion of Islam and politics is hot topic that got even hotter after September 11. Sometime ago The Freedom House Organization issued an alarming report about democracy in Muslim countries. The question is: Is it Islam as a religion that is against democracy? or the fact that most of Muslim countries are dictatorships for historical / political reasons and religion is not a direct factor?

How much does it cost to have a website like this?
Written by Said Samir
Wednesday, 12 May 2004

To have your own website like this one, you first need a domain name (www.yourname.com or net or org or de) and that costs about 12 Euro per year.  Then you will need a space on an Internet server to host your website (hosting) and that has to be an advanced server with database and programming support (not like free space offered by some companies).
